  • PS4 Update 1.70 Official Details

Well Sony doesn't plan on falling behind the Xbox One at any point. Right after Xbox One’s major firmware update, Sony revealed update 1.70. This update is the biggest one released by Sony till now and adds a slew of features. The official details were posted on the PlayStaton blog and are as follows. Although it has not been mentioned exactly when the update will be released, it is our guess that it will be quite soon.

    Update Features:

    Introducing: SHAREfactory

The 1.70 update will enable SHAREfactory, our new rich video editor app for PS4 that makes it easy for you to customize your gameplay videos:

With SHAREfactory, you can now easily combine your captured video clips for editing, personalize them with special effects using filters, transitions, and themes, as well as share them with your friends and social networks. SHAREfactory also allows you to personalize your videos by adding text, stickers, and a set of included audio tracks, as well as video commentary with picture-in-picture capability with PlayStation Camera. It also allows you to import your original music to add to the custom soundtrack for your video.

    Share With the World

Once you’re done with your masterpiece, you can easily share your SHAREfactory videos to Facebook, or export them to an external USB storage device to upload them elsewhere, another new feature coming as part of the 1.70 system software update. Other PS4 SHARE enhancements include the ability to change the recording time of your gameplay to shorter increments, the ability to change who you share your clips with on the SHARE screen, and the removal of default saves for screenshots and video clips. In addition to these SHARE enhancements, the 1.70 update will allow you switch off HDCP, enabling you to capture video directly from your HDMI output so you can record and share longer clips of your gameplay sessions — a feature I know many of you have been waiting for. We are excited to see what the PlayStation Nation does with these new social features, and cannot wait to get them into your hands!

Play as Soon as the Game is Released

Providing you with immediate access to your games is a priority designed into PS4, and something we will always strive to make better. We’ve had a great response from PS4 fans about the Play as You Download feature, the snappy load times when launching and playing games, and the general speed and responsiveness of the UI. The 1.70 update adds features to build on this idea and make it faster to play the games you pre-order with an auto pre-download capability, which allows you to pre-download your select pre-ordered game up to several days prior to release. If you have the auto-download feature enabled, it will automatically pre-download your pre-ordered game so you can play as soon as the game is unlocked on release day.

As I mentioned earlier, some of these features were a direct result of the great feedback we’ve been getting from you, our dedicated gamer community. We enjoy listening to your comments, and encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts with us. And this is just the beginning. We’ve got a lot more coming in PS4 system software update v1.70 and beyond. The PS4 experience will constantly evolve, and new innovative ideas can come from anywhere to ensure the platform continues to deliver the best in gaming and entertainment every time you turn it on.

We’ll have more information to share about new upcoming features for this major system software update as the release approaches, so stay tuned!

  • PS4 Eliciting a Sense of Pride from DEVs

We have heard how the developers were behind the design and architecture of the PS4. We have also heard about how much the devs enjoyed working on the PS4 as a consequence. But now it seems that the devs are enjoying working on the PS4 so much that they have a sense of pride towards it?

This is what Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Worldwide Studios president, had to say in response to what kind of feedback he expects from the internal teams,

"I don't have to ask for this feedback, they just tell me. They are so happy that they can just focus on the games. They don't have to spend so much time trying to understand the hardware. The progress that all teams have made is great. That's a consistent message that I get. Many of the team members of the studios were already involved in the discussion of what PS4 should be, what DUALSHOCK 4 should be in terms of improvement from DUALSHOCK 3.

I get the feeling when I talk to the teams that there's a real sense of pride that they are now using the system they helped to design. They have a genuine passion for showing why PS4 is so special for playing games on. We can show the best of PS4 through our games."

I guess it makes sense, why wouldn’t you be excited if a console giant finally heard what you wanted in the console that would make your work that much easier. Considering the awesome exclusives that came out for the PS3 regardless of its difficult and trying architecture, I have high hopes for the next gen games. Can’t wait to see all the new experiences the next generation has in store for us.

  • PlayStation 4 Camera Specs

In the wake of full specs being revealed for both the Playstation 4 as well as the Dual Shock 4, the official details of the Playstation Camera has also surfaced. The official retail price of the PS4 has been set at $59 or £54. The PS4 Eye camera features a bespoke "AUX" connection to the main console which is awesome because we can then attach this 60/120/240 FPS camera directly to our PCs!

The new tech demo for the PS4 Camera and the Dual Shock 4 really brought out some cool functionality of the peripherals. It looks just as functional as the Kinect now that it has two camera’s instead of one now. Check out the following video to see it in action:

  • PS4 Official Specs Revealed

Sony has officially revealed their official specs however Microsoft has still to confirm. At least now we can get a better estimation of what is the real capability of the PS4. Although to most consumer’s this detail might not affect their purchase decision, for those who are deciding on which console to get based on specs alone maybe this list can be of help.

Most of the details match what was previously speculated with the Playstation 4 featuring 8 low-power AMD cores and is based on the new Jaguar architecture. It will also have the Radeon GPU architecture which is capable of computing 1.84 TFLOPS of workload. It will also have a 500GB hard drive which can be replaced (with a bigger HDD or even an SSD) unlike that of the Xbox One as Microsoft’s console is not user-replaceable.

The final thing that was confirmed about the PS4’s hardware is its unprecedented 8GB of GDDR5 RAM. That is also an improvement over Xbox One as it is supposed to have a 8GB off GDDR3 RAM. Considering that even the most expensive consumer-level PC graphics cards can't match this allocation, Sony must be taking a substantial financial hit on this. But I guess it is a solid move that might pay off in the long run, as a general rule of thumb, the higher the RAM the more future-proof the system is.
